Process
The process starts by arranging a session in your home to get the casts done. Generally two hours is plenty, but to ensure you are as relaxed as possible, please do not arrange anything else you need to get to urgently that same half day. It is great to give me an idea of what you would like cast before hand, but final decisions can be make on the day. I live in Wandsworth and have a studio in Fulham, so I am happy to come to most areas of South West London. If you are further afield, additional travel and time costs might be necessary.
Home visit
I advise for you and your children or babies to avoid wearing your Sunday best. The materials I use are non-toxic and do come out in the wash, but it is often unavoidable for bits of the casting material to get on clothes. (Especially with young babies if we are trying to cast whilst breast feeding).
I will bring plastic sheeting to put down, but it is preferable if we can do the casting in a non-carpeted area. I will also need access to warm water.
I will bring a selection of samples with me so that you can see the casts close up and make a final decision on what finish and what castings you would like taken.
I will then explain the process to you, and we will get the baby, child or children into a comfortable and suitable position for casting. Babies can be cast when asleep or feeding. With toddlers and children, I will talk them through the process and get them involved. We will select a suitable container, then I will make up the casting material. I use alginate which is a non-toxic soft material used by dentists.
Once the alginate is mixed it will ‘go off’ (i.e. set) in a short space of time (3-9 minutes depending on mix used). This is when we plunge the limb to be cast in the gooey blue or white material. Once it is set, a little wriggle quickly releases the hand or foot from the mould and the cast is taken.
I take the alginate moulds away with me to cast from them in my studio.
Note: I need to come by car as I have a lot of materials with me, so if your area is resident only permits, please arrange for a visitor card for me.
After the visit
I will contact you to let you know how the casts came out, and if multiple casts have come out well, I will offer you the option to buy the ‘spares’.
I will then finish the sculptures and engrave on the base your chosen inscription.
Delivery
I will deliver the finished casts back to you in 3-4 weeks.
Payment process
Please pay 50% deposit by electronic transfer before the home visit or by cheque on the day. Final balance by electronic transfer before delivery or by cheque on delivery. You will receive invoices for both parts by email from me.
