In lay terms, this means that this is a billion times bigger than the crystal of diamond is. Diamond is made of carbon atoms that each connect to another 4 carbon atoms in what is called a tetrahedral lattice. In this work the small men represent the carbon atoms, and the wonderful hexagons you can see only exist in our vision of it. But it is these hexagons that allow light to travel through a diamond crystal allowing it to shine so brightly.
